Worth the effort - By: J. Tippet, 29 Jul 2007
This is a really great book that is told from 2 different perspectives, Nick livesin a world like ours but knows that magic exists & works but is hidden, Roddy livesin a Britain where magic is common place & accepted. The book culminatesin a fantastic final showdown where all the strands come together.I really enjoyed this book & feel it is well worth the effort. It might be a bit confusing for young readers but if your child is a confident reader I would recomend it. If this is your first DWJ book I would suggest you follow it up with Howl's Moving Castle, Hexwood or if you love Harry Potter try one of the Chrestomanci books instead such as Charmed Life.
I have been reading D.W.J. since I was a teenager & she will always hold a special placein my heart. Much as I love Harry Potter I find that DWJ's work goes so much further, not just one other world beyond ours but several. The breadth of her imagination astounds me. For all the fans of Harry Potter, he would not exist if people like DWJ had not come 1st.

i liked nick mallory's character when i read 'deep secret' a couple of years ago, a book i still love, so it was a wonderful surprise to find him as one of the main charactersin this book too.
I was expecting more - By: , 18 Mar 2005
To be honest I really really did not like this book at all not only was the plot incredibly slow butin many places had me completely lost! I wont say don't read it at all because the plot it quite interesting. Personally I could not stick it any longer & infact never finished the book by about 10 pages!
Good, could be longer - By: Ms. Jennifer J. Mable, 04 Mar 2004
The Merlin Conspiracy is a good basic story, the characters are beautifully developed & the various links & connections between them both compelling & enthralling.
The only problem is it seems to take forever just to build up the story. Don't get me wrong, I've no problem with big build ups, they usually lead to big climaxes.
However, the climax to this story while exciting seems rushed. It seems to me The Merlin Conspiracy could do with being a series of books, & the end is left fully open to a sequel, it just seems that the real story doesn't start quick enough to enthrall a less than dedicated reader.
In a time where big action is the big thing this wonderful fantasy might be lost to most readers who prefer the short more action filled journeys. It should not be overlooked however as the characters excel at being intresting, from the complexities of the main characters Roddy & Nick, to the sublimely awful Izzies.
A compelling read that, while it could be longer, is still a fantastic & classic story.
A bit weird... - By: M. Ivanova, 13 Feb 2004
In general I did enjoy this book, but it is a bit childish... usually books for that age, are perfect with me (I'm 24), but this one was definitely like it says on tin, 11-13. Too many bizarre places to bein this book, a lot of begginings of stories about different worlds, & only few of them were finished, bit too messy, but OK, I amin fond of both kids who "wrote" this book as their diary, boy is even better.
