A quick take that's quick to read - By: M. Williams, 24 May 2006
A great tale - just enough detail to paint the right pictures & give you an insight into the mind of someone overwhelmed by a given situation.
A great tale to pass sometime; refreshing to read something that is so complete & yet relatively short.
Blackwater - By: Lance Mitchell, 23 May 2006
Blackwater by Conn Iggulden is a fast-moving story told by Davey, a man who has lived his life as a tragic victim, often suffering at the hands of those closest to him. The book starts with Davey standingin the cold, calm, dark, nocturnal sea at Brighton beach, wearing his best suit & reflecting on his awful life.
Since childhood, his main tormentor has been his own brother, but things have recently got much worse. His wife treats him very badly, but he can suffer that because of his deep-seated love for her. It is because of her actions that two extremely violent men have joined the long list of people who have made his life a living hell.
Davey's tale is easy to read as it is writtenin conversational English. It moves at such a pace that the reader is always wondering how it will conclude & that view changes continually throughout the book. Even when the last word has been read, one is left puzzling over what could happen next.
Blackwater has a flavour of Ian McEwan's Saturday about it. I doubt that its pace & tension could be maintained to a lengthier versionin a full-blown novel, but as a short story, I would rate it highly & would certainly recommend it to a friend.
Never has £2.99 kept me this entertained. - By: , 11 Mar 2006
What a fabulous tale! Faultless storytelling, constructed with great skill.
I read thisin one sitting. It's 80 pages long so a single sitting wasn't too great a demand on my time. However, I was so hookedin that, even if it was an 800 page epic, I would quite possibly have shelved all thoughts of sleep & nourishmentin favour of turning the pages.
I enjoyed Conn Iggulden's 'Emperor' series very much but this is very different & will be of interest to many readers who have not already discovered the author's significant talents through the world of Historical Fiction. Blackwater is my favourite book by this author to date.
A must read short story. - By: Mr. A. Morrison, 03 Mar 2006
This book is exceptionally well paced & entertains from the very beginning. The writer draws you right into the story from the start by having the main characterin a sticky situation which makes you question what drove him to be therein the first place. The plot then unravels & things begin to reveal themselves. The story draws youin with an intriguing first chapter & then finishes you of with a brilliant final paragraph. This is another excellent story from what,in my eyes, seems to be one of the most exciting up & coming authors of the time. Five stars.
an excellent short read. - By: mr m whitehead, 23 Feb 2006
As Short books go this is one of the best.
Not a word is wastedin this pacey & tense story, the characters continue to grow until the end & the story line is relentless.
Conn Iggulden continues to prove his story telling prowess. All the strengths of the Emporer series come throughin this book. The story moves with fluid ease with a fully grown plotline & believable characters.
A book it is easy to start & very difficult to put down at the end.
