Make sure the set you're buying has illustrations - By: Alianor, 11 Nov 2008
I was an avid fan of Laura Ingalls Wilder's books as a young girl. I read each of them about 4-5 times before the age of 10. I would highly recommend them to anyone, young or old, male or female, who wants to read a riveting first-hand account of lifein pioneer America.
However, for the 9-book box set (the one that features photographs on the outside of the box & on the covers of the books) the publisher has made the bizarre decision to reprint this set without the Garth Williams illustrations that featuredin the books for so many years. Garth Williams created his illustrations after talking to Laura & her husband so they were only one step away from the events describedin the books. For young readersin particular, the illustrations are very helpful when imagining pioneer activities & traditions that are unfamiliar.
If you want to read these books with a child, I would recommend seeking out older editions that contain the illustrations. The 5-book box setin full colour, though it doesn't contain all the books, does have colourised versions of the original illustrations.
My favorite book series. - By: , 20 Oct 1998
I grew up right along with Laura Ingalls Wilder. The Little House books became my outlet for adventure. I enjoyed Laura Ingalls Wilder's bravery, her trials & tribulations & her ability to cope with any situation. I will be giving this set to my child for Christmas this year & hoping that she will enjoy the timeless tales as much as I have for the past 22 years.
go Laura! - By: , 20 Aug 1998
I've reviewed "Little Houses"in my language translation when I was young. I was surprised by these american pioneers' persistence to be survivein the "new world" they desided to live their lives in. From a little girl who loved sky, river, sun, rain & wind, Laura filled her parents' shoes & be an image of strong woman. She married a farmer & went along the new places she has never been to. Her adventures were more than stories but she made them greaterin her books.

An adventurous, absorbing book about a young girl's memories - By: , 11 Dec 1997
My grandmother gave me this set of books when I was a girl, & today I read a chapter to my children every night. The stories range from charming to scary to side-splitting. Laura, urged by her own daughter to write these books, had vivid memories of her childhood & adult life. She voiced these memoriesin a fascinating way. I admit, even though I've read these titles numerous times, I often find myself reading on after my children are asleep.
