Good first inmersion in tensor calculus - By: Daniele Cadorin, 09 Jan 2008
If you want to get rid of much of your reluctancein tensor calculus & fight powerfully with Einstein index summation & relief your pains with Christoffel symbols & Riemann Curvature Tensor, essential for General Relativity understanding then, I think this book, with solved problems & many others for practicing, is a good guide to make General Relativity & Cosmology more pleasant. I am a self-learner of Cosmology & of these kind of mathematical topics, I used many books from the more theoretical to the simplest ones & think that this & the Sokolnikoff's (Tensor Analysis & Its Applications) are a good couple of references to understand this branch of tools for Physics & making me more happy dominating the practice with these objects. Later on, if you are more interestedin going deeplyin the axiomatic bases of tensors (possibly by using Gravitation of Misner, Thorne & Wheeler), at least you'll already have the calculus foundations to go on. I know many others would say that there are many other wonderful books, but to me this is the one I found the best to condensate the most of all my doubtsin the subject and.... go on.
Good Book, But Hard As A Rabid Gorilla - By: , 29 Jun 1999
Tensors are a booger to learn, even with a great guide like this. It's just hard. But this is the best guide available. More completely worked out problems would be nice. A very very solid groundingin vector analysis & linear algebra is required before tackling this book, however.
