a good course, easy to use - By: Bernard M. Abel, 15 Sep 2006
I m sorry to go against some other coments about that ancient Greek course, but I have to say that I have enjoyed working on Athenaze a lot. I m currently studying Attic Greek, & do use this course along with the "reading Greek" course from CUP.
Athenaze does take things easy, gently, the grammar is very well explained, the exercises are easy & there s a good choice, & the textbook is interresting to use..
Even without a teacher, i would recommend that course for self study, as it is really clearly organised & does make the study of ancient Greek very easy, & interresting
Alright but could be better - By: an_anonymous_thinker, 06 Sep 2003
I took up Greek for GCSE & we have been using this bookin the classroom. The stories & characters are fun but some of the grammar is very confusing & the long explanations are sometimes hard to follow.
With a teacher there to help with any probvlems this book is quite good but if you are planning to teach yourself the language using this book it might be too hard.
I think Cambridge are coming out with a better book so I recomend you look for that instead.
I hope you get something because Ancient Greek is a wicked language to know!
Not the best... - By: , 23 Jul 2002
I got this book, as i wanted to be able to read the classicsin the original. In some respects it is good;from the beginning you can read storiesin greek , some of which, based on Homer & stuff are interesting, others not so. But it is satisfying to be able to read greek prose, not matter how basic it may be.
However, although it does present relative things like noun cases & so on, it doesnt really present themin an overly easy to understand manner. Plus, it moves quite slowly, so for most of the book, you are only reading thingsin the present tense, which annoys me. Its a two part book, so to continue the course you have to buy another book(obviously), which is also annoying. In short its OK, but I would recommend, for a cheap & fast introduction to greek, Peter Jones' book, as it presents examples from authors such as Sophocles & Plato, & explains things very well.
