I amin my second year social work degree & have found this book to be easy to understand & very informative. I would recommend this book to anyone studying social work.
A must for any social work student - By: Bezerus Bezby, 16 Nov 2007 I found this to be an essential study tool when undertaking a Mastersin social work. The chapters are well laid out, with excellent summaries of specific actsin green, so as not to confuse you.
The section on the 1989 Childrens Act is particularly useful, with the various orders, sich as Care orders, nicely summarised to help you learn them more easily.
Worth the money- it does help you understand social work law.
Law CLEARLY explained for social worker students! - By: Imoen Paige, 01 Sep 2007 I'm about to commence a MAin Social Work at Warwick Uni having completed an unrelated degree & had a few years outin the "real world". So like a dutiful swot, I've been wading through this bookin attempt to try & make sure I don't appear like a complete idiot when the course starts.
So far I have found this to be extremely clear, unlike one of the previous reviewers, because they explain any law terminology/jargonin plain Englishin brackets afterwards. Each chapter explains the lawin enough detail for general comprehension of what they are supposed to do & then consistently refers to court cases to show how the theory is practisedin life. This gives an indication of how future cases may turn out. If I forget or get confused which Act or legislation or organisation the writers are currently writing about, the glossary of abbreviations is available to help me at the front of the book. At the end of each chapter there are a series of exercises to test the comprehension of what you've read, & a companion website with suggested tactics to answering them. I find this a particularly useful learning tool; I like being able to compare this with my own answers to ensure I'm on the right lines & help me consider what I might have missed considering.
Unfortunately, you can't just dip into it anywhere. You should read itin sequence & then refer backwards when necessary to retain coherency if you don't know anything or have patchy knowledge! It also misses out later Acts such as age discrimination (October 2006)in employment. However, if you keep thisin mind when studying it; the fact it isn't complete doesn't detract from being usefulin what it does cover.
It's a must for all social work students (postgrad or undergrad) & interesting if you find politics & point of law engaging. I never realised just how devious even the UK government (a country who is supposed to be one of the leaders) weasel out adhering to Human Rights, among other topics within UK law & courts...

This book is writen & presented at an understanderble level, rather than overloading you with the dynamics of legislation. although this text will give you a comprehensive knowledge base on which to practice from. it covers all recent legislative changes including the effects of the green paper on social work delivery, as well as changes around anti soical behavouir & social exclusion.
at the beging of each section it clearly lays out the overview of the chapter & objectives, further giving you an actual case study then walking you throgh this case study, demonstrating the ethical & value dilemas of the case.
the companion website is fantastic given you the opinions of hte writerin relation to cases
I reccomend this up to date text it is a valuble tool for all students on the new degree course.
