Insightful - By: Carl, 04 Mar 2008
This book provides an excellent insight into the point of view of one of Germanys most famous Generals, as he storms across France with his 7.Panzer-Division & the fightingin North Africa. This is supplemented by excellent editing by Liddell-Hart who comesin with footnotes or text to correct any slips or exaggerations made by Rommel during the narrative so we gain a clear picture as possible.
This however ends Erwin Rommel's participationin the book. Rommel's actionsin Italy, Normandy & his final days are covered by Fitz Bayerlein (who fought along side Rommel & was the divisional commander of the Panzer Lehr Division during the fightingin Normandy) & his son Manfred Rommel. However these sections also add to the book & the insight into the man.
The only flaw which can be said of the book is that Rommel does not let on to the enormous amount of intelligence he hadin regards to Anglo-Commonwealth strength & dispositions during the Desert War thanks to intercepted messages sent by the American embassy staffin particular Colonel Fellers.
Rommel is Armored Warfare's Greatest Engineer - By: , 15 Aug 1999
Not at all difficult to read, & even a bit intense during his narrations, this is anin depth look at the brillience of Erwin Rommel. Undoubtably the most perceptive & insightful German commander of the war, Rommel exhibits incredible understranding of troops, commanders, & what is possible & impossible on the battle field. His remarkable ability for retrospect provides engrossing lessons & conclusions of modern mechanzied warfare that any military historian or strategy goo-roo craves. Primarily about the African campaigns, & of the fall of France, Rommel recounts the events of every battle, & then analyzes the outcome, & reasons for that outcome without bias. This book will provide a thorough grounding & clear understanding of mechanized warfare, & a great respect for its greatest engineer.
How did he carry those watermelons! - By: , 29 Apr 1999
This book was long, but I sure did enjoy it! It ranks right up there with Xenophon's "Anabasis" & Bernal Diaz's "Conquest of New Spain". I was always amazed when Rommel would recount all the setbacks & huge enemy forces. Then he would say , "For my next attack...". Watermelons!!!!
A window into the daily life of a brilliant FeldMarschall - By: , 08 Apr 1999
This book gives a day by day account from the 7th Panzer divisions blitz through France to the oven like atmoshphere of the North African deserts. Giving an insightful view of Rommels thoughts on specific days of battle, with explanations for his actions whether they were correct or catastrophic. Also demonstrates the behind the scene problems a General has to deal within order to be effective. One of the best books I've ever read written about one of the best military strategist to ever practice the operational art of war.
Great review of the events of WWII by a Great Armor Officer - By: , 29 Dec 1998
This book takes you through the events of World War II using the unedited writing of General Rommel. Hart does a great job of insuring the thoughts of Rommel are preserved. The hard bound version of this book, has chalk drawing of Rommels battle plans.
