Bring on Volume 2, I can't wait - By: Ms. Ruth Hicks, 04 Jul 2008
Discovered this by accidentin a old fashioned book store & love it. OK so the humour is a bit naff but this guy seriously knows what he is talking about & how to put it on paper so that the only thing on your mind after reading a chapter is reaching for the camera to put it into practice.
Quick tips that can really help improve the pictures that you take with whatever equipment you have to hand without blinding you with science.
Very helpful - doesn't blind you with science - By: Nicola, 17 Jun 2008
This book is really well done - it gives a lot of useful & easy to understand information that will enable you, the proud owner of either a SLR or a point & shoot camera, to improve the photos you take.
It isin different chapters covering all sorts of photography from shooting flowers to taking wedding photos. It suggests useful bits of equipment & gives various options for people who are on tight budgets right up to those who have plenty of spondoolies to throw around.
The ONLY grumble is the humour is a little childish & irritating at times, but if you overlook that, it's a great little book.
I suspect this book will bein my camera bag for some time because there's lots to learn!
Great as a first DSLR book - By: Anna S., 16 Jun 2008
Admittedly, Scott Kelby's personalityin this book did remind me of that stereotypical, excessively familiar (but ultimately a good friendly bloke) American who we've all had the pleasure of encountering, & who enjoys nothing more than the sound of his own jokes ("almost fooled ya there, didn't I?!", etc.). And yes, the book may be slightly let down by the author's humour (or should that be humor), but don't let that put you off - he knows his stuff, & it contains very useful tips,in plain English, that will improve your photography. On a personal note, I must have slightly underestimated my own skills when I purchased this book, & found I was largely familiar with much of the content, but nevertheless found most of the advice extremely helpful on a practical level. For example, one of my favourite tips was to always keep the eyes of the subject 'tack sharp' (yes I know...), be it portrait or wildlife photography. Following this simple advice religiously has dramatically improved my photographs, & now looking critically at some of my old photos, it is clear that I wasn't always conscious of this, blindingly obvious as it sounds! The most useful part of the book for me were the last few chapters on how best to shoot for specific conditions, such as silhouettes, night landscapes, etc. There are plenty of excellent photography resources these days, from magazines to online blogs, but it's great to have all these useful tipsin one reference book, written largelyin a concise & clear style, with each topic illustrated appropriately. I would recommend this to a beginner as their first DSLR photography book.
A great starting point - By: Mr. P. Ovey, 04 Jun 2008
Ignore all the reviews slating the humourin this book. Yes its there, but only reallyin the first section, & its a nice departure from the coldness foundin other photography books.
I have found this book very helpful, each page is a different subject & it gets right to the point. If you want to know how to take great pictures of waterfalls, you just look on that page. And guess what.
Yes the advice given works.
If you want to take better pictures & not get bogged down with all the tech talk get this book.
Great Book, Informative And Very Beginner Friendly - By: Mr. M. Morris, 20 May 2008
This Book is great, it takes all of the complicated jargon ie understanding DOF, exposure settings out of photography & gets straight to the point.
When i read the book some things had me thinking " how obvious, use a tripod for taking shots to get sharp images" but there are simple techniques that we just dont think about when out shooting, & its like this all the way throught.
Also it`s a very enjoyable read, each page is not a top to bottom of around 500 words, there is a full colour image to illistrate, & a small paragraph about the technique. Very good book highly reccomended
