Great FRCS (TR & Orth) Revision books - By: Mr. S. Wimsey, 31 Oct 2008
I bought this book along with all the othersin the series (bar the trauma one) & consider it £300 well spent. They are well written, up to date, & easy to read. They definitely cover all you need to know, & I think they will take a lot of the pain out of the revision needed for the FRCS (Tr & Orth) exam. I still will use the Stanmore Basic science guide & Miller, but these books bring you up to speed quite nicely & allow you to read around the subject & actually understand it, rather than just mugging up for exam puposes.
Orthopaedics - By: J. Tilley, 17 Jun 2008
This book provides a comprehensive collection of information ranging from anatomy & biomechanics to amputations & orthoses. There are many MRI, radiographical images & photos supported by bullet pointed text. Unfortunately I felt there was no real flow to the book & reading proved difficult. Prominence is allocated, as the title depicts, to specialities within orthopaedic surgery divided into 29 chapters including tables, summaries, differential diagnosis & treatment plans with outcome measures & percentages of success. The strong emphasis on surgery made it complicatedin some areas for an undergraduate, yet interesting, but it was the lack of flow & persistent bullet points that I found let it down.
Excellent - By: Dr. Sj Parsons, 11 Jan 2008
Having just passed the frcs orth, i wished that i had read this book prior to the exam, it is excellent. Every bit as good as the OKU series if not a little better as they are cheaper & hardbacks, good range of subject material wriiten by leadersin their field (Mostly North American, these people do however need to learn that there are some very good surgeonsin the Uk & Europe!)
if the rest of the series is as good i shall be buying them, & would strongly suggest that pre-exam trainees either buy them as they will definitely get more use than Campbells.
