Dragon Prince - a great read - By: Spiral_Towers, 14 Jan 2007
I first read this book many years ago- maybe 1990. I have read this & the entire series every few years since. I don't really read this genre that often anymore but found the characters & events compelling. The series spans a few fascinating generations. It has everything you would wantin a good book - kingdoms, good, evil, power, politics & smidgen of romance & of course dragons - a real page turner. I loved (but sort of resented) the fact that time was very real to the charactersin these books - they grow old! I really mourned the story being passed to the next generation - but quickly became as intrigued with engrossing new events.
Although each bookin the series can be stand alone I would really advise anyone to read themin the order they were written - starting with this one "Dragon Prince".
The other aspect about this series I liked was that all the books are good meaty reads so you will be gripped for ages.
Even if this sort of book normally puts you off - read this one - there will be no turning back!

An enjoyable and absorbing read - By: A. K. Davis, 28 Apr 2005
Rohan becomes prince of the desert earlier than expected when a dragon kills his father. No one is sure how he will do as he so different to his father, quiet & studious instead of loud & physical. The three yearly trading meet is approaching & Rohan knows the pressure is on him to select a bride there. His Aunt has selected one of her sunrunners (can communicate by weaving the light from the sun & moon) while the High Prince has many daughters he is offering.

This is a very enjoyable read & although it's not the best fantasy book I have read I finished the bookin three days & I'm keen to read the rest of the series. The book appears to bein two parts; the first is about Rohan becoming prince & selecting a wife (more complex & political than it sounds) & then there is a gap of a few years & the story continues with the repercussions of Rohan choice. I would have been happier with the book if it had finished after the first part & the rest wasin the next bookin the series, I almost didn't go back for the second part, but obviously it didn't take me that long to get back into it.

Gone With the Wind with Dragons!!! - By: , 08 Feb 2004
This is the stunning first novelin the Dragon Prince trilogy. Melanie Rawn introduces us to a wonderfully three-dimensional fantasy world which is both enchanting & believable. The characters too are beautifully written - all are realistically flawed human beings who make mistakes & have to live with the consequences of their actions. The plot combines political machinations with real emotional depth & genuine human tragedy. Oh & there's some dragonsin there too!! Even if you are not a fan of fantasy writing I would recommend you to read this book - it offers wonderful escapism, adventure, & even a touch of romance.
A must read - By: , 26 Jun 2003
Brilliant characterisation, romance, adventure, magic, intrigue, politics & dragons - Melanie Rawn's heady mixture provides a textured & believable world, & a damn good read. There are no superheroes here, instead the characters are fallible, complex & completely human. This would be an excellent novel (and series) for those who have never sampled the Fantasy genre before. Read it now!
Magic, dragons and politics - By: , 15 Nov 1999
A wonderful mix of politics (which always makes magic/fantasy worth reading), a plausible system of magic, & who can resist dragons? I don't know whether I just happened to read this at just the right time, but I found the characters believable & I really cared about what happened to them (even (or especially?) the baddies). I loved Rohan's (and Andrade's) political machinations, the magic system is powerful enough to be useful, but apparently not infallible & the link to the dragons is sketchy at this point, but (trust me) worth reading the remainder of the series for.

Read it. You'll enjoy it. Although I'm sure you would never fall into all the same traps as the characters do, there are some that will get you, & isn't second-guessing what you SHOULD have done half the reason you read good fictionin the first place?
