Carl Hiaasen Introduces Skink, His Greatest Comic Character! - By: Donald Mitchell, 28 Sep 2004
If you have ever enjoyed any Carl Hiaasen novels about the abuse that Florida's environment has taken from developers, crooked politicians & ne'er-do-wells of all kinds, Double Whammy is one of his finest accomplishments. That's primarily due to Mr. Hiaasen's loving introduction of his great comic (and tragic) character, Skink. Earlyin the book, Skink (who appearsin so many later novelsin the series) joins the story as he combines to help R. J. Decker find out how a famous fisherman has been cheatingin bass fishing contests. In fact, this book has more Skinkin it than any other Hiaasen novel. If you are a Skink fan, this is a five-star effort.

The book's premise turns out to be but a red herring for a more sinister plot that soon threatens both Skink & Decker.

Mr. Hiaasen's rapier-like wit leaves his targets walking around with their heads cut off without realizing it, as they do one foolish thing after another that lead them to their inevitable doom. Some of the targets include unethical real estate developers, television evangelists, bass fishermen, sporting event sponsors & the idle rich. If you enjoy seeing any of those pilloried, this is a fine book for you.

The book contains one of the most diabolical dispatching of a villain that I have ever read. It's a masterpiece.

The book does have a drawback. Mr. Hiaasen seems to have fallenin love with his story. After the premise is confounded, the story takes too long to develop. It becomes a page turner . . . not because you cannot wait to get to the next part, but because you want the book to reach its inevitable end sooner.

A truely sinergistic moment in literary history - By: madison159@yahoo.com, 24 Nov 2000
Never before has the publishing world combined their literally minds & marketing talent to bestow upon the public such a benevolent gift. Surely, The Carl Hiaasen Omnibus--a combination of three brillant novellas, layered with modern day wit, charm & tact, will be remembered by the public as a watershed act of chartiy & by the publisher's shareholders as a momentous act of stupidity. Tourist Season, Double Wammy & Skin Tight offer the first time reader of Hiaasen a plethora of material to indulgein at a bargain basement price. I truely believe the publisher made a mistake by offering such wonderful gems under the same title cover without charging a premium. Readers will find themselve's staying up later than normal, ignoring loved ones more than normal & regretfully, sitting on the toilet longer than normal, while trying to finish this magnum opus of a page turner. Not since the edition of the Bible has a collection of stories been able to command such attention from the wall-eyed masses. It almost leads one to believe that this literay thriple threat was the result of divine intervention. Why, you ask? Because how else can one explain the fact that The Carl Hiaasen Omnibus was written by...Carl Hiaasen. This fact is a truely coincidential eventin modern history, one that rivals the death of Jesus & the conspicuous birth of Christianity. But, before asking any more questions, read the book. You will come away blessed for life.
