Good writing doesnt make for a good book - By: aceadrian, 05 Jan 2009
There is no doubt whatsoever that this book is a class work, its writing is strong, captivating & poetic - but only if thats what you are looking for.
To enjoy this book you need to be seeking deep feeling & most importantly be willing to lay your emotions open such that the book can affect you, because that is its goal - to draw youin & touch you.
If that sounds like your goal then getin here.
Personally I found the book to be a serious drag, it was difficult to get into and, though it flows well, was no page turner. The story, whilst feeling original & progressing well did not hold my interest. The characters were well described & became familiar,in a way that was rather subtle. Despite this, somehow, they did not hit the spot.
Heartbreaking - By: Nesten Birte, 04 Jan 2009
Highly original, shocking, extremely moving, though never sentimental. Wonderful prose. Could not put it down. An essential read - one of the best books I've readin years. Should not be missed!
Amazing. - By: Tish Pom, 29 Dec 2008
This book is without a doubtin my top three ever.
Seabold writesin such a factual way about events which would spark most writers on an emotional sprawl. This sounds like a negative but is suprisingly the contrary. It is a beautiful book that i couldnt put down & couldn't stop thinking about. I read itin two sittings & was totally enthralled.
As with all good books, i felt a real bond with the characters, i felt their emotions, i cried, i laughed & i loved every moment of it.
you simply must read this book!
Truly original. - By: Louise Amkaer, 03 Dec 2008
"The Lovely Bones" is a novel that I can review with two words: TRULY ORIGINAL. I sincerly mean that. Plenty of novels have a deceased as the narrator, but until now none of these have transcended that veil between life & death & telling a storyin a fulfilling way - the way "The Lovely Bones" does.
"The Lovely Bones" is the story of the family of Susie Salmon & the way they cope with Susie's disappearence & murder. This is also the story of Susie, dying a horrible death & looking down on her family on Earth & having to let go. Susie's death actually deserves a special mention: it is vividly detailed without becoming vulgarin any way, which is a big thumbs up for Alice Sebold.
I've noticed that this novel is recommended by some to teenager. I would like to modify that. "The Lovely Bones" is one a happy story with a they-lived-happily-ever-after-ending, even though the ending is optimistic. This is a novel dealing with heavy issues of death, molestation, grief, adultry, revenge, neighborly suspicions, & even turning away from responsiblity. Yes, some teenagers can read "The Lovely Bones", but I would call it a very adult novel.

A Worthy Read - By: accidentallykle, 28 Nov 2008
Possibly not everyone's cup of tea, but personally, I thought it was a beautiful novel. A very sentimental read. Recommended - give it a chance!
