Quite simply outstanding. - By: Faceache, 30 Nov 2008
Although I grew upin the Nort East, there are striking similarities between the life portrayedin this book & the life I grew up with (with the exception of my father who loved us dearly).
It brings back many memories & is a totally enthralling read.
Go on! treat yourself!
Fantastic - By: VJ, 25 Oct 2008
This is not a graphic 'woe is me' 'life was so hard' tale of abuse & poverty that was so popular a few years ago. Instead it is a fabulous collection of wonderful childhood memoirs of a young lad who had great friends & a warm loving mother. What a lovely book. Your Ma would be proud Mr Douglas! I can't recommend it enough. A soothing balmin an endless sea of books about hardship, misery & violence. By the by, I was bornin 1976 a fair few miles from Glasgow - this is a book to be enjoyed by all!
Best books I have ever read. Evelyn Woodcock Edinburgh - By: Mrs E Woodcock, 10 Sep 2008
In the last week I have finished both Night Song of the Last Tram & Somewhere to Lay My Head, often reading them until 3.00am or 4.00amin the morning as I simply could not put them down. I have today been out to buy the last instalment At Her Majesty's Pleasure. I cannot wait to start it. I feel I have walked through the streets of Glasgow, Blackburn & Bathgate with Robert Douglas so vivid is his descriptions of life growing up & his teenage years. I have laughed & criedin equal amounts as I turned the pages. He really makes the 40s/50s & 60s come to life. I would recommend this book as a must read, & will be passing the copies I have to anyone who wants to share my love of these books - with the proviso that they are returned to me as I will keep them on my bookshelves forever.
Just finished reading this wonderful book. - By: F. Solberg-Wormald, 25 Aug 2008
I have just finished reading this wonderful book. I was taken through, tears, smiles, warmth, human kindness & rejoicing that only comes from the the soul of human struggling & hardship. The heartless father & typical British glass system gets a beating by the pluckiness of this hardy Glaswegian boy who's strength is fueled by his mothers love. I must admit to having tearsin my eyes several times. This is a book that will remainin my book case as a reminder.

A must must read ! - By: G. Jones, 27 May 2008
This fabulous book had me laughing out loud & a few pages later had moved me to floods of tears. Robert's account of his trip to the Bluebell Woods at 'Mulguy' & picking flowers for his mum was simply magical. And his lucid account of the treatment from his brutal father was simply heartbreaking. I just couldn't put this book down.
