Useful - Well, almost - By: F. Morrison, 02 May 2007
I purchased this book with the objective to gather information for my A2 Level History Individual Assignment, & I have to admit that it is a fantastic book as an overview, but if it is specifics that you are after, then I suggest you look elsewhere & skip this book. The author appears to be focused on not influencing the readers' opinion, but by doing this, there seems to be no definite statements & opinions from the author that can be quoted & used.
In other books I have encountered, the authors have made their opinions known, or at least provided information that can be quoted for usein assignments or exams. This book however is very much "third person"in that Farmer seems to want to just state facts without much backing.
Soin my opinion, but this book only if you want a brief overview & not if you want something specific.
A review on A. Farmer's Origins of the American Civil War! - By: CuRn®, 30 Mar 2003
I bought this book as a guide or if you like a support book for my AS level American history course. I was recommended to by this book by both my subject teacher & the examination board. This book covers the period of 1846-61in American history, it provides an easily accessible point of reference for any one interestedin history.. if they be a student or someone with just an interest. This book is aimed more I believe at students as it features at the end on each chapter a section on making notes & exam questions based around the context of the chapter.
As this book is aimed at students it only covers the vitals for one to get a good understanding of American history. However don't let this put you off, as it does provide a great starting point for any historian. I think once you have purchased this book you should buy the restin the series so you can follow the story through.
