Girls Only is a great book! - By: , 23 Dec 2008
I am 9 & my mum got me this book because I wanted to know more about what happens when I get a bit older & maybe start my periods. It's easy to read with "friendly" text. I feel that it explains a lot about changes that happen to girlin a nice way with lots of nice pictures. I liked the Girltalk speech bubbles. It's something that you can share with your mum or a best friend because it doesn't have any informationin it that I would be embarrassed about. (I'm very pleased I got this for my daughter. I'd bought her another one which wasn't so good & saw an Amazon reviewer, aged 10, who recommended this. I'm glad I took her advice!)
Brilliant - By: Sally, 18 Sep 2008
I have bought a number of these types of books, read them & not given them to my daughter as they seemed "wrong". This one is the one I gave to her & it's pitched perfectly. My daughter is nearly 10. There was enough information but not too much. It is based around periods, hormones, spots & body changes. It touches on sex but notin detail & it satisfied my daughters light curiosity without me needing to move onto "the talk". She savoured what wasin it & feels happy & confident about it all. She has even loaned it to friends. The font is good, the text has a modern chatty feel, it is a good book for girls aged 9-12. Recommended.
Boys, keep out! - By: Shady Tree, 15 May 2008
I bought this for my curious 9 year old daughter as a book for us to read togetherin conjuction with the excellent "Let's talk about where babies come from". These were the first books I'd bought on the subject of puberty & sex education; before that we'd only looked at Clare Rayner's "The Body Book" (perfect for younger children). "Girls Only!" is perfect for introducing the subject of periodsin a modern, chatty & matter of fact way. The illustrations & graphics are funky & appealing & the front cover instantly attracted my daughter's attention. She picked it up, asked what it was, & I said that I'd bought her a new, special book about growing up. She asked if we could read it together, which was great, but having read the book first I'd have been just as comfortable letting her read it alone if that's what she'd wanted.
I'd say the way the book is written is perfect for girls of 9 & upwards. I love the way it doesn't assume that every girl reading the book has a mum to chat to about periods & it even gives tips on how to raise the subject of periods if you live with your dad. It's not patronising & manages to draw the readerin as if the book is a kind & fun friend or relative.
As well as periods, the book covers hygiene, boys, spots, myths about periods, & a useful glossary of medical terms & how to pronounce them. Allin all it's exactly what I'd hoped for & I would recommend it wholeheartedly.
Girls Only! All about periods & growing-up stuff. - By: Kamer, 23 Apr 2008
I bought this for my daughter (9)a while ago when she started asking questions. Although happy to discuss the subject with her, she is an avid reader so I thought a book she could refer to would be a good thing for her to have too.
It is perfect for girls!
She is now 10 & this book is well-thumbed & still comes out constantly. She is confident with what it has taught her & as some of her friends have it too, they all discuss the topic together. I'm still recommending it to friend as their daughters grow.
Excellent!
The best book I've found on the subject - By: A Commuter Reader, 11 Mar 2008
This book really tackles the subject well.
My daughter's school started covering basic sex education, puberty & reproductionin year 5in PHSE & my daughter felt that everyone at school knew all about this stuff except her.
Soin addition to talking to her we got her this book to read when she was 10 & it was just right. She keeps it under her pillowin bed & frequently refers to it. It speaks the reader just like a reponsible big sister!
