Good but.... - By: Wannabe Hindi, 03 Nov 2008
The only complaint I would have (and it must be bornein mind that I have only been learning Hindi for a month or two) is going from CD's 1 & 2 which are relatively easy to understand to CD 3 which has conversations delivered with little help & at normal-ish speaking speed. I have played them over & over & can pick out the word sounds but do not have a hopein hell of finding the meaning from a phoentic description of the sound. I can get the gist (i.e. when the married couple are having a disagreement) but as to what is actually being said- well hmmmm it is a mystery to me.
The Perfect Refresher Course - By: Dl Fairey, 13 Jun 2008
I begun learning Hindi over 14 years ago & took the initiative to learn the Devanagari Script there & then. I bought an expensive Linguaphone Course & it really got me up & running.
Like all things though, my interest faded & every now & then I'd make an effort to crack on learning Hindi. A few years ago I came across the Teach Yourself Hindi pack, book & 2 CDs & my interest re-awakened. The TYH Courses are easier to grasp than the Linguaphone one, the latter of which came with 6 poorly recorded cassettes. Also, the grammar sections are a whole lot easier to grasp so I found myself progressing quite quickly.
However, I decided to buy this three CD set (Hindi Conversation) for the car & this has been an enormous help. Although I can picture the words as they are spoken (in the Devanagari script too) you don't really need to know how to read the written wordin order to progress & ingest the course. I've sharpened up my pronounciation, come across a whole new library of conversation & I've surprised myself by how much I actually know!
The course is well arranged, the diction incredibly clear & the situations describedin each unit are fun. You can learn Hindi with a smile on your face (and other drivers may look at you strangely!). Play the CDs over & over again & you cannot help but pick up everyday Hindi. Your friends will be amazed (as are mine every time I speakin Hindi/Urdu at our local curry house!).
This set along with the main Teach Yourself Hindi pack and, very useful, the accompanying dictionary - aimed at English speaking people learning Hindi (unlike other dictionaries) are all you need to become fluentin a most beautiful, accessible language. You'll have fun & you might even make a few new friends along the way!
An amazing resource - By: D. J. Fox, 06 Apr 2008
I couldn't agree more with these positive reviews. It's abundantly clear that a great deal of time, effort, thought, humour & passion has gone into these CDs. I have been using this course for two years now ... along with Rupert Snell's excellent Hindi Dictionary - I just play a few conversations each day whilst travelingin the car - it's amazing how it all sinks in!
I'm definitely no "natural language learner" -in fact, this is the first time I have ever tried to learn a language off my own back. I could not recommend this course enough to anybody even faintly interestedin learning Hindi - amazingly, these CDs just make you want to learn more & more! The characters (Anjali & Amit, Mohan & Margarie) feel weirdly like friends to me now! It is a tremendous achievement to have crafted this series of conversations that teach you all the basics & more, but which don't come across as contrived or mundane.
My friend from Delhi says my Hindi has improved immeasurably since he last saw me 12 months ago. He can't believe I have learnt it all from a few CDs! My recent trips to India have been enriched by a whole new dimension. Indians are well known for their friendliness, but there's nothing like the joy on a Delhi-wallah's face when you greet himin Hindi!
Mercifully, there's no need to learn the script for this course - although I may well try to get a grip on that too now.
Learning a new language takes effort - so you need the best resources available. Look no further than this course. If I could give this six stars, I would!
I cant recommend enough!!!!! - By: P. Hughes, 27 Feb 2008
Over two years I had accumalted a lots of Hindi books & resources with accompanying cds, tapes. And really never learnt much.
Having said that these Cds are ideal for complete learners & two of my friends have put the lessons to good use & they have never looked at a Hindi language book!
These CDs free you from learning lots of script. Or reading confusing roman script dotted with lots of symbols for different sounds.
They are totally independant; there is a little book that accompanies them but you dont have to use it at all for the exercises. The conversations are broken down & hints & tips are given throughout.
Also the conversations are quite fun & there are some funny gambits too.
There is a Teach yoursef Hindi book & Cd & beginners Hindi book & CD by the same people; but the conversationsin this pack are injected with some humour & cover so many more situations than the aforementioned & any other resource out there.
The best thing about lessons on Cd is you can put them on your computer, Ipod & re listen again & again until you get it right.
If you want to learn Hindi you will make no mistake by purchasing this pack.
Hindi Conversations - By: A SHARMA, 01 Jul 2005
This is a superb course of spoken hindi - with plenty of grammatical pointers throughout. Whilst [naturally enough] it doesn't follow the step by step introduction to the language that the author's "Teach Yourself" books do, it does start you off on conversations that bear some relationship to those that you would wish to use earlyin a trip to the sub-continent.
