Second best - By: C. A. Hill, 31 May 2008
The second book by Robert Douglas is the second best - another cracking read but without the impact of his first book. In fact you really do need to read Night Song of the Last Tram before you read this as his references to his ma feature occasionally. Great dialect writing & the book does capture the feeling of Britain before motorways & at a time when there was a mining industry. His description of his timein the army &in in the mines is brilliant - I could really sense the period he was writing about.
I can't wait for number three - By: S. Welham, 19 Jan 2007
A real joy to read again. The wonder of a cheeky child turning into a man to make his Mum proud. He is so compassionate & understanding & never moans about the rough deals he hadin life. I loved it.
Roll on Vol 3 - By: T. Duffy, 12 Oct 2006
Perhaps this second volumein Robert's journey through life is not as funny or as tragic as "Night Song Of The Last Tram" but it is nevertheless a very good bookin it's own right. He takes up from where he left usin Night Song, through his early jobs, livingin a men's hostel, through his national service & a little beyond, i'll not give anything away, but if not as moving as his first volume, it is still full of nostalgia for anyone who lived through the period. If you have read his first book, you will need no prompting to get this one, but if you havn't read it yet, then it's really time you did, you will not be disappointed. Roll on the next volumein the series.
