ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ - By: Mr. M. Swarbrick, 31 Dec 2008
Can you give it no stars?? This is the pits. Slow & boring. You get to the end & wonder WTF was that all about. Plot & characters are dull & lifeless. It limps along like the slowest thing ever. If this was ever made into a film then after 10 minutes you would want to kill yourself. I think anyone who rates this as a good book is having a laugh. It is the biggest piece of excrement you could ever read. Do not read this book under any circumstances.
An absolute show of the versatility of Stephen King - By: Ca Mainwaring, 04 Dec 2008
I read this book on honeymoon & as a person who has read every King Novel/short story collection from about the age of 10, I have to say this is one of his best.
I am sure that the majority of people rating this 1 star were expecting a full on Horror story.
This book is articulate, the characters are amazing, you really care about what Lisey is going through.
Buy this book, it is a must read.
Under rated - By: Mr. Tj Phillips, 10 Oct 2008
I can understand why people are giving this book (and Cell before it) a bad review. But that's only because the majority of people are not open enough & are quite ignorant.
Yes, this is a different story to what we're use to from King & it's nothing like his earlier stuff. But what would you expect. Time changes people & we should REALLY be a bit more accepting. As he grows older he is likely to write about things which effect him. Never did Stephen King write FOR the reader, he is writing for himself. In an interviewin 2003 he said he was quitting the world of publishing, but not writing. Obviously he changed his mind about the publishing bit, but this just shows that he was willign to write NOT for the reader, but for himself. If you read this book, looking at it from an oblique angle, keepingin mind the changes the writer has faced throughout the years, this is a great book!
I'm Sorry But It's Just Bad.... - By: Ms. Stephney Girvan, 17 Sep 2008
The first time I picked up this book, I stopped reading about half-way through, what put me off was the language. Specifically, the language that Lisey & Scott seemed to have like SOWISA, Bool, Blood Bool, although it was explained, it just seemed unlikely, & a bit bonkers.
I tried again to get through it & I just about managed to reach the end & wished that I hadn't bothered. It was a completely complex story that wasn't explained properly & moved very slowly.
I was left feeling confused, although to King's credit the characters were well rounded, (if a few sandwiches short of a picnic...)
Other reviews point out what King intended & I knew this when I was reading it but it didn't stop the plot being absolutely ridiculous. I honestly wish I had of bought another book with the money I spent on this.
One of my favourite Stephen King books! - By: Becs, 01 Jul 2008
Lisey's writer husband Scott had been haunted by dark memories & more throughout their long marriage. Now he's dead she realises how much he depended on herin order to cope with his life. But she's being threatened by a madman so she has to find a way - 'guided' by her dead husband - of surviving.
When I started reading Lisey's Story I wondered if I was going to be bored by the time I got halfway through, as it's over 650 pages long, & my fave SK book is the short & pacy 'Carrie'. I needn't have worried.
The main characters & the dark memories are so interesting that I didn't want to put the book down. In fact, several times I found myself holding the bookin one hand whilst stirring the dinner with the other hand. The trouble was, the story was so gripping that I kept forgetting to stir. Fortunately, the food was still edible...just.
A word of warning: there are lots of flashbacks within flashbacks. You'll need to concentrate, so you don't forget where you arein the story. But if I can manage it with my chronic insomnia & limited attention span, then so can you. The second half of the book gets better & better; you have to keep reading to find out how it's all going to turn out.
I loved the ending of the book - it made me feel like cheering! Read it - but get someone else to do the cooking.
