what alot of rubbish - By: little elk, 15 Dec 2008
Thought this was a really weak book. The computer diary stuff just doesn't make sense & Sophie Hannah seems to have swallowed & regurgitated every cliche every written about motherhood & children.
Gripping, if orthodox, thriller. - By: AK 1957-05, 12 Dec 2008
There was a pointin this book where, having been kept avidly turning pages for some time, a traditional character-in-peril plotline emerged. In the context of what had hitherto been an unusual thriller, I was madly guessing ahead that this rather plodding, orthodox part of the story was going to turn out to be the wild imaginings of a mentally damaged character...sadly this turned out not to be the case, & I was left feeling a little deflated that this obviously talented writer was dealingin such mundane matters. (For those who have read it, I'm talking about the point when Sally discovers the massage table onwards).
That's the problem with this book - it's well written, it's gripping & it's complex, but it's oh-so-traditonalin some ways. The final section of the book is given over to a car journey where two characters explain the plot to each other - "So what made you so sure..." "And it was then I realised...." & so forth. I was expecting Mark Kermode's Basil Exposition to enter stage left!
Having said all that, I devoured it quite quickly & would definitely explore Hannah's other works.
Disappointing - By: Bumpkin, 18 Oct 2008
This was the first book of hers that I have read. It was not a believable story for me & I found it difficult to finish. As with another reviewer I didn't really care what happened to the characters as I never felt I got to know them. Won't be buying any more from this author sadly.
The Point of rescue for me - By: The Magpie, 02 Oct 2008
Didn't enjoy this as much as her other books, found she was just filling the pages with words just for the sake of it. Also found the ending & plot unbelievable.
An interesting read - By: Avid Book Devourer, 29 Sep 2008
An interesting read - but I agree with reviewers who think it fell shortin the later chapters. I wasn't really convinced the main character would have had the energy for an affair on her 'holiday' either! Not only were the police very slow, but if her car had been vandalised outside the school would noone have noticed & raised the alarm?? A few discrepancies but made me read on despite them.
