A medical text book that isnt likely to give you a coronary infarction - if u dont understand buy the book and learn about it :P - By: J. Waldron, 09 May 2008
For students i would say that a good 3/4 of text books out there are almost completely unsuitable for us. - id like to cite the incrdibly confusing & appalling Neuroscience book that we were recommended to get.
This book is
1)easy to read
2)colourful with clear & USEFUL pictures
3)Logically set out (again a severe rarity with med books)
4)an indespensible help throughout a lot of medical courses (unless you want to be a pathologist of course where something more about the size of the actual coffee table may be necessary) - lot of the older years refused to sell on their books after the initial path exams saying that it was too useful & they still needed it.
If you want a pathology book for studying, dont bother with any others, get this one! sincerely.
like "smooth and sexy epithelium" as Stevens and Lowe would say..! - By: R. Spencer, 22 Nov 2007
shiny, beautiful & a pleasure to own.
Simply the best path texbook out there; its so colourful & well laid out you just WANT to read it (and that's pretty rarein a textbook...)
I had the pleasure of having Stevens & Lowe as my path lectures at Uni, they're a crazy fun pair who make pathology really come to life, & they've carried on that themein this fantastic textbook.
First choice for medical students! - By: Dr. Paul Johns, 12 Nov 2007
This book is probably the best undergraduate pathology text book around. I used an earlier edition when I was at medical schoolin the 1990s (I am now a pathologist myself) & the latest (2nd) edition seems to be even better. The photographs & diagrams are abundant & (generally) of superb quality & the text is crisp, clear & authoritative - with a slick, glossy finish. True, it probably has less factual detail than some of its larger, more 'dense' competitors but many students find these texts dry, uninspiring & unreadable. In contrast, the vivid artwork & photographsin this book really bring pathology to life. In my opinion, Stevens & Lowe has to be the first choice for medical students - I give it five stars!
Excellent - By: , 21 Jun 2004
As also demonstratedin their text on histology, these authors really do understand undergraduate needs & address them so eloquently. The use of colourful illustrations & of clinical photographs of patients & pathological specimens brings even more life to the comprehensive yet accessible text. A brief 'clinical overview' introduces each chapter & reminds the reader to never forget the clinical context. The concluding pages consist of over 100 multiple choice questions, largely with a clinical slant, excellent for revision purposes & for relating the science with the patient. A most comprehensive yet user-friendly book.
Clear, readable Pathology for 1st and 2nd year med students. - By: , 03 Oct 2000
After reading significant chunks of several different pathology textbooks I found Stevens & Lowe to be a breath of fresh airin terms of readability. The pages take the form of a body text which conveys the main message, supported by accessory text boxes & statistics. Illustrations tend to be large, detailed & clear. I have found that the book is a real pleasure to read, rather than a burden, & I have found that I have read & learned much more because of this.
In my view this is a significantly better book for early medical school than the more widely read "General & Systemic Pathology" by Underwood. Studentsin the latter half or medical school may benefit from perhaps a heavier book, such as the N. Woolf's "Basic & Systemic Pathology". There is also a CD Rom which can be purchased separately to support the book.
