I am also a student at Glasgow University, & found Professor Smith's book both easy to understand & interesting to read. His writing style is very appealing,and like his lectures, you come out of it feeling like you have really learned something. Whether you are an English Language Student,or simply have an interestin the subject, Essentials of Early English is so essential, Pete Tong should be spinning it around on a 1210, during his 'essential selection'show every Friday on Radio One!!!
An excellent introduction to the subject of English Language - By: , 16 Jan 2002 This book is copmpulsory to my English Course at Glasgow University. Studying here, I actually study under the author, Jeremy smith who is my tutor. This book is excellent & definative, yet at the same time easy to understand. The book has a large section of Old English, with smaller sections of the later variations of English with helpful & interesting points of information on the history & development of the language. It also has a particularly helpful vocabulary section.
I would recommend this book to serious students & armchair linguists alike. An excellent & interesting read.
