Great start for a new urban fantasy series and not too much romance! - By: J. Cooper, 02 Nov 2008
... Which is a bonus as I prefer my paranormal fiction to be at the urban fantasy end rather than paranormal romance with tediously over-drawn & arrogant Alpha males.
This book makes you work as the author assumes you know the short story that came beforehand. And I quite liked figuring it out.
I didn't find Anna annoying or overly submissive; I found that her character developed once she stopped being regularly beaten & raped. The romance also developed at a sensible rate - Anna was a person who had been brutalised for years. The real core of the story to me, was the back story of Bran, his sons & his own parentage, which fillsin well with the Mercy stories.
I look forward to the next onein the series.
A Good Read - By: Mali Moon, 31 Oct 2008
This book delivers a story from a female werewolf perspectivein a pack, unlike the Mercy Thompson series, which mainly discusses werewolves & pack from a male view.
I will not describe what the story is about, as you can read synopsisin the product description. The only thing I would point out is that the book does not describe what an omega isin too much detail. You kinda have to piece it together yourself.
That aside, I thought the book was a really good read, with a good pace & storyline. If you enjoyed the Mercy Thompson series, you will enjoy this book for sure.
The next series to come from Mercy Thompsons' world - By: klynn, 29 Oct 2008
I was desperate for the next Mercy Thompson installment & realised Briggs had brought out another sort of 'spin off' story about Charles; Son of the Marrok & younger brother to Samuel Cornick.
I'll have to admit, i loved all the characters very much but i just couldn't love Charles like i do Samuel. Ok, as a reader i've know Samuel Cornick for three books now & this is Charles' first shot but i felt either too much of the character was hidden or he just wasn't my kind of guy!
Anyway, the story starts by immediately throwing us into the belief Charles found his Mate while on a mission for his fatherin Chicago. Anna, his new mate, is from the Chicago Pack & despite being formmerly abused by said Pack is the rarest & most intriguing form of werewolf- an Omega.
Charles is injured after his missionin Chicago & the two travel home to the safety of the Marroks territory. Not long after their return, a rogue stirs up trouble by murdering hikersin the nearby mountains & Charles (with Anna by his side) are sent out to deal with it.
The introduction of a new & very old charater means this small errand for Charles isn't quite what it seems...
I'm sorry, but i feel i've missed a book out here. I feel a little duped. The most interesting issues are missed- how Charles got injured, how he met anna, why anna so readily leaves her home town, how & why Charles killed her former Alpha... the list goes on. I feel a little stupid here 'cause i hope i haven't missed out a book!
Patricia Briggs Does It Again! - By: Lesley70, 08 Oct 2008
Cry Wolf continues the story of Charles & Anna begunin the short story Alpha & Omega (from the On the Prowl Anthology). Anna is moving to Montana to live with Charles, & take her placein the Marrok's pack. However, when you live as long as werewolves do, you can make a lot of enemies. Before they have time to resolve the issues between them Charles & Anna are on the hunt for a rogue werewolf & a whole lot of history is about to smack themin the face.
I think Cry Wolf works best if you've read Alpha & Omega first, there is a catch up at the beginning of Cry Wolf but I think you'd get more out of the story if you read about Charles & Anna's first meeting & how Anna became a werewolf. This book also slots into the Mercy Thompson Universe following up some events that happened after Mercedes returned to the Tri-Cities.
I love Patricia Brigg's heroines. They're not superwomen, they're doing the best they canin difficult situations.
"She wondered that hope was so much harder than despair."
Anna is an Omega wolf. She's previously been told she's a submissive, the lowest of the low, but that just isn't the case. What we experiencein Cry Wolf is Anna starting to learn exactly what it means to be an Omega. Charles & Bran will only help her so far, part of beingin a werewolf pack means she has to find her own place.
Charles & Anna's relationship as humans is much more wary than their relationship as wolves. Their wolves have already decided they are mates, however their human halves have not. Kind of a unique situationin werewolf society as it usually happens the other way round, with the wolf being more wary.
Patricia Briggs has fleshed out the relationships between the various members of the Montana pack, how they work together as a unit, as a dysfunctional family. It's interesting that Anna thinks of the pack as a bunch of psychotics,in a way the Montana pack is a pack for werewolves who can't fitin anywhere else - they're too damaged, too setin their ways, too broken, but very interesting to read about.
Because Cry Wolf is writtenin third person rather than first. It also gives us the opportunity to see situations from more than one point of view. It's nice to be able to see what both Charles & Anna are thinking, & also be to see the way Bran thinks & to learn more of his history. There are more complex relationships being explored here rather than just that between Charles & Anna. We also have Bran & the pack, Asil & Bran, Asil & Sage. Each one unique & revealing something different.
I did find the middle of the book a little slow, however with this being the first bookin the series, everything has to be set up here, so that didn't bother me too much. And as it seems only one book will be released for this series a year, I have a long & impatient wait for the next book. Recommended.
Good but have read better in the were-wolf end of paranormal romance... - By: Jessica Simpson, 08 Oct 2008
As werewolf novels go this one is a good solid read but it is by no means the best out there. The plot is well planned & well carried out but I was left feeling that it could have been so much more with just a little more effort. As the first Patricia Briggs novel I have read, the world she has created here is easy to pick up & you are not left feeling as if you are missing vital information from the book that introduced these characters originally - an anthology.
After 3 years of mistreatment at the hands of her own pack, Anna meets Charles. She learns that she is an Omega, & as such is entitled to a far more revered position within a pack structure. Not only this but he is her mate. After years of abuse & subjugation she is not so much reluctant, but wary & untrusting of her changein stature. Just as she is introduced to new territory, evidence of a rogue wolf turns up, prompting Charles & Anna to be sent to investigate. A dangerous task that will test them & their relationship to it's limits.
This book rolls along smoothly but it's not going to be a book you can't put down. The characters themselves are engaging & easy to like - aside from Charles's step-mom of course, she's not a nice woman, but that's intentional :) . One thing I would say though, for a paranormal romance novel it was very light on the romance. One particular tryst takes up a page & half at most while another barely gets it's own sentence. Not all paranormal romances need graphic scenes to grip you but the lack of themin this book makes it hard to understand the bond that grows between the central characters. Perhaps I am judging to harshly but I failed to find much chemistry between Charles & Anna because of this.
I will be reading more by Patricia Briggs. After a little research on Amazon I discovered that Anna & Charles's story startsin an anthology. I think this may be why I've missed the chemistry between them as I missed them meeting each other & discovering their link as mates. That part happensin another book.
Overall, this is a book I enjoyed, but it didn't make me love it. Let's see what else Patricia Briggs hasin storein 'Moon Called'.
