Invaluable resource - By: Ms. N. L. Benson, 10 Jun 2007
I found this book informative & descriptive it gives a true insight into electrotherapy with indications, precautions & contra-indications, which are invaluable to the new student with limited knowledge & practical application skills. During preparation for the end of 1st year vivas it became an invaluable source of reference as it helped to explore other methods of treatment when dealing with muscle & ligament injuries & how they can coincide with exercise prescriptionin the management of injuries. The end of section summaries that deal with the effectiveness of each treatment, are a fantastic bonus & allow the reader to further their insight into the application & use of each treatment modality. By giving a brief account of the studies that existin each area of electrotherapy, which can then be looked up independently as the authors & dates are given. I feel that this helps to build effective practice & encourages the reader to further their knowledge. The book overall is well set out & will be well read throughout placementsin my 2nd year.
Practical Electrotherapy - By: Mr. R. Lockhart, 01 Jun 2007
This book is well laid out & generally structured. It has an excellent step by step guide with illustrations to help understand the method of application of the different modalities. The book effectively lists physiological effects, uses & contraindications, however these are a bit vaguedin part.
I thought the space left for notes or treatment record was very useful as it gives room for summaries etc.
t was good to see a well referenced summary of studies relevant to the specific modality. However the authors seem to have got carried away with these & wrote too much.
Some of the illustration are quite dated & it would have been nice t see some more modern equipment.
Generally "Practical Electrotherapy: A Guide To Safe Application is a well structured, detailed, valuable tool for either the student on placememnt or the qualified therapist.
Extremely useful - By: K. Turner, 31 May 2007
This book has beenin our department for a while & has been used by all our physio's, from ESP's to students.

If you are a student it is great as its really easy to quickly look up a modality & know at a glance the physiological effects, therapeutic effects, contraindications & precautions. It also has a table for each modality listing all recent research with a summary of the results- great for writing essays.

However, if you are a more experienced clinician the book is great as it gives a step-by-step guide for the use of each modality- great refresher when you have not used a piece of equipment for a while. Inaddition to this, the book lists the parameters for each modality- again helping if you have forgotton!!

There are also useful 'Reflection Checklists' at the end of each chapter along with blank notes pages.

I will definately be recommending this book to my next student.
Practical Electrotherapy - By: Nick Brum, 28 May 2007
John Fox & Tim Sharp's `Practical electrotherapy; a guide to safe practice, is a good book to introduce students & newly qualified physiotherapists to electrotherapy or to refresh their memories whenin the work place. The size & layout of the book are good. The diagrams & images are useful to relate to practical use & the text layout -Technique theory, practical application, research & comprehensive references is easy to use & evidence based. The chapters are well laid out to cover the majority of electrotherapy modalities. Explanation as to the treatment effect related to patient condition & contraindications is great as a guide to know which modality to use on which patient supported by the evidence that backs it up.

A link to a web resource would be a great addition, although as it stands Practical electrotherapy is a useful tool for the physiotherapist.
Highly Recommend (Physio Student) - By: L. Wilkinson, 17 May 2007
The book provides information on the main types of electrotherapy treatmentsin use, split into three sections, which is then subdivided into individual modalities. This makes comparing similar treatment types simple & convenient. The book is also ringbound making it easy to keep your page whilst referencing material as well as increasing the lifespan of your book. It is a great resource for both students & thosein practice.

Each chapter provides information on equipment required, application, contraindications & physiological & therapeutic effects. This is presentedin easy to understand & concise text, incorporating bullet points, pictures & tables. It also includes for each modality, summaries of research conducted, providing a great place to start when reasoning your choice of treaments. Plus there is a checklist to guide the student through the process & spacein each chapter to add your own notes. An appendix contains the electrotherapy parameters & skin tests making this information quick & easy to locate.

The only criticism I have is that the background theory behind treatment types is very brief & would benefit from a little more depth. However, this is a minor point & I would still highly recommend this text to all students & therapists alike: a great book to havein your collection.
