great neuro section - By: M. SMITH, 08 May 2007
Really good book. The clinical stations are well covered -in particular this book is worth buying just for the neuro section alone which is really easy to read & understand & gives you a great framework for approaching clinical cases (this is also what countless colleagues of mine have cited as the book's main selling point!)
The ethical & history taking stations are not so well covered & i would recommend ryder's gold book for these if you feel the need to revise for these (this is why only 4 stars)
Certainly enough detail to pass easily - addin Ryder for those rarer cases which do occasionally come up & you will be sorted.
Best Paces book out there - By: Mephistophelean, 03 Mar 2007
The problem with MRCP Paces is that there aren't that many books out there to read. The main texts are the Ryder books & this one.
In my opinion this book is better than the Ryder text. It treats each station comprehensively &in a logical format. The problem with the Ryder books are that they are very haphazard. The books jump from one topic to another, almost as though you are reading what came into Ryder's head next!
Baliga doesn't have many pictures (as notedin many of the reviews under that book) & is far more theoretical than the Hall & Ryder books.
As notedin previous reviews, Hall also gives some detail to the communication & ethics station compared to either Baliga or Ryder.
It's slightly unfair to compare the Hall book to Ryder & Baliga as Hall has the definite advantage of having been published later & so can respond to how the Paces exam has developed.
Having said this, buy all four books (this, the two Ryder & Baliga). They all have different detailed examplesin them & it's important that you get as wide a variety of examples before taking the Paces. As noted above, there aren't enough books out there currently for Paces candidates to pick & choose books.

A cosy read, but not as hardcore as baliga or Ryder - By: bigflat, 06 Jan 2006
This book has a very pleasing feel about it. A comprehensive range of chapters, excellent paper quality & for the most part excellent information for the part 2 & PACES.
This book is born of two fathers; Ryder & Baliga. Its uniqueness is that it seemlessly blends case presentation with background knowledge. In fact many of the cases are used as a sounding board for less relevant but important information on cytokines for example.
At times it the link between the case & the blurb seems tenuous but for the most part it helps revise medicine & flesh out those answers.
The author should definitely be congratulated on producing an excellent Paces revision book; & this is only the first edition!
Overall I think it doesn't obviate the need for the more old-fashioned Ryder, & Baliga both exellent texts. For people wanting a slightly softer approach then this book is perfect.

Excellent! - By: , 26 Feb 2005
This is a breath of fresh airin a market that 'Ryder' seems to have saturated. Well laid out, easy to read & utterly relevant. Also serves as a useful reference tool post-membership too. Buy it!
