The President would not say Donde - By: , 17 Feb 2006
This course is an odd mixture of formal & colloquial language & is too much Lisbon centred. It is full of colloquialisms like bica for black coffe & the like, you usein Lisbon but not everywherein the country, let alone other Portuguese speaking countries. Pronunciation is not always the best standard. Donde is something careful speakers do not say, they say De onde (this means from where or where fromin a question). At the other end of the scale you have very careful speech, like that of the President of Portugal, too advanced for a beginners course. This is neither a good beginners course nor a suitable advanced one. I would not use it with my students (I teach evening classes).

Good Introduction to Portuguese Conversation - By: , 30 May 2001
This is the best of three different Portuguese language courses I have usedin an attempt to learn the language (you need to buy the book to accompany the tapes)! The chapters of the book are fantastic to help you progress quite quickly with simple Portuguese conversation. In addition, the book has loads of really facinating information about the Portuguese culture & a weighty section at the back of the book on grammar. It's never easy to begin learning a new language. What I liked about this book was the emphasis on conversation without having to develop a comprehensive knowledge of the grammar (unless you want to). I would highly recommend having a go at learning European Portuguese with this book, even if you have failed with others.
