Long before the advent of DVD players or video recorders the BBC would create LP records of not surprisingly radio shows & later the soundtrack of television programmes. And so during my youth at the height of my Monty Python obsession I bought this & the other Python LP's to keep me entertained whilst I waited for the next set of repeats to be shown on television.
The first series of Python included some of the greatest sketches to ever be shown on television including the classic Pet Shop sketch, Nudge, Nudge & of course the Lumberjack song. Routines so popular they not only graced this LP but every Python live show. Listening to these on the record was perhaps pointless as they were also being performed dailyin school playgrounds across the whole country.
With hindsight I think this record an improvement of the TV show. As a totally audio experience the thing is not marred by men with big hair or wide trousers, lapels & ties. The seventies has never looked so good.

This is the very FIRST recording put out by Monty Python. The CD of which is not availablein the U.S. so if you are wanting to complete your Monty Python CD library then you want to get this. Has lots of the classics performed livein front of a studio audience such as "Nudge Nudge, Wink Wink", "Lumberjack Song" & the "Dead Parrot Sketch".
The only beef I have is that Amazon.UK insists that this is an AUDIO BOOK & that you have to pay "book shipping rate" which is about twice as much as the "CD shipping rate". Complain to them about this & they should refund you the difference if you are persistent. Hopefully if enough people complain they will finally realize that this is NOT an "AUDIO BOOK" & that it belongsin the "Music Section" along with all the rest of the Monty Python CD's they sell here.
Monty Python's first album -- Hard to find in the U.S.! - By: , 12 Aug 2003 If anyone is wondering, yes, this is Monty Python's first album, originally released on BBC Recordsin 1970. It consists mostly of some of the best sketches from the first TV series, adapted for audio & re-performedin front of a studio audience. The audio is of studio quality, with only some inobtrusive & appropriate laughter from the audience. There is some evidence of the Pythons starting to play with the medium of records, although not nearly to the gloriously goofy extent that they would on subsequent records, once they signed with Charisma Records & had a freer hand. This also means that the packaging & notes of this album are not as off-the-wall as they would be for subsequent records. However, the recording is wonderfully hilarious, & can serve as an excellent introduction to Monty Python.
