One of the great all-time classics of cockroach and cat.- By: sandra_harris@premiermp.com, 13 Aug 2001 His is not an easy life. Archy, a humble but literate cockroach livesin the grubby, downtown office of writer Don Marquis. Every night, when Marquis puts on his hat & goes home to his wife & kids Archy climbs on to his typewriter & laboriously hops from key to key, typing out his thoughts on life & love & the great dramas of our time. As his legs are not quite long enough to go venture into capitals all Archy's work must be readin lower case. This handicap adds to Archy's pain & to his talent. No-one writes with more angst than Archy. Or as he would have it, archy. His muse is Mehitabel the Cat, a one-time sex kitten who has seen better days. Mehitabel's fur has lost its gloss, her ears have a slightly chewed look about them but she has never lost her joie de vivre & retains an enthusiasm for life & hope for the future. 'whatthehell, archy' she says, 'toujours gai, toujours gai'. The tale of Archy & Mehitabel is one that has been delighting readers since the thirties when Marquis first discovered the talented cockroach & encouraged himin his literary efforts. He is as much loved today as he was when he typed his first missive, while Mehitabel is one of the first feline feminists. A cat who not only drank the cream but satin it.
