A Brilliant read - By: I love reading, 14 Jul 2008
Sacrifice is one of the best books I have read for a long time. I simply couldn't put it down. It is beautifully written, the plot & storylines are full of magical twists & turns, based on the rugged landscape of The Shetland Islands & involving local legend & folklore. The author has researched the theme well & she manages to bring to life the main character Tora.
An amazing book that brought about one of those now rare occasions when your mind keeps going back to the story. I now have to pass it on to other friends & family. I look forward to more from S J Bolton, she has become one of my favourite authors.
Bloody Brilliant - By: the elf, 10 Jul 2008
More twists & turns than a Labour Government. Just as you think it's all over you realise there's still a lot of pages to read. Yes, maybe it is a bit far fetched (Trolls) but at least it's original & damned good for a first novel. Read it & let yourself believe, lose yourselfin the plot - you won't be disappointed!
What a disappointment! - By: Va Curtis, 29 Jun 2008
I have to disagree with those who raved over this book (the reason I bought itin the first place). Admittedly it's quite well written but the story is so far-fetched I found it utterly impossible to suspend my disbelief. It is also much too long.
I only read till the end in the hope it would get better. - By: sosij, 17 Jun 2008
Clichéd, obvious, dull ... I can only surmise most of the other reviewers are either family or don't read very often because this is one of the worst books I've readin a long time. The main character is irritating & unbelievable, the other characters are two dimensional & the story line? Awful. The author didn't even bother to visit Shetland until after she'd written the book & it shows. The quality of writing is also very poor. The general premise was so promising but ultimately I have been left very disappointed.
scores points as a thriller, not as a novel - By: H. Lacroix, 15 Jun 2008
As a thriller this is not a bad book at all. It is the story of Tora Hamilton, an obstetrician, recently settled on one of the Shetland islands, who discoversin her field around the house, the body of a young woman whose heart has been taken & on whose back runes have been carved.
Finding the police more than reluctant to pursue the investigation seriously, Tora will do her best to unravel the mystery. Her life will become more & more complicated as she realises that several people, among whom her husband , her boss as well, would like her not to take such a personnal interestin the case.
It is as a novel that the book fails. When I read I like to see sentences that I would never have been able to write myself. I like authors to avoid as many clichés as possible. Here, the author just seems to go for all the unsubtle twistsin the plot. The heroine will be deeply attracted by her mesmeric boss (although she has only been married for five years to the most gorgeous husband on Earth, if we are to believe her), she will feel lust for him even a few seconds after she has been nearly scared to death (how she goes from one extreme to the other isn't plausible)and the reader has to deal with quite a few sentences so trite they make painful reading.
