An excellent and highly readable book.- By: S. Turnbull, 08 Sep 2008 The Rothschild buildings were erected for the poor but respectable Jewish families who arrived from Europe during the latter part of the 19th century. Jerry White writes the historical facts simply & informatively but does not forget the human stories of the people who made their livesin this Victorian tenement building. This book is richly detailed with fascinating intimate knowledge of the families that lived there. We learn about the class structure that existed within the building & the support network that existed between the tenantsin great times of need. The co-existence with the poor of the east end outside of the block is explored & the dietry & lesuire habits explained. If you are interestedin London,Jewish or Victorian history I highly recommend this book.
