Perhaps a review of the wrong book?? - By: Mark Loughridge, 07 Jun 2007
Having just purchased this book, & then looking at the review by Dr Hilary Johnson I genuinely wonder if she has attached her review to the wrong book.
The intro to this book says that it is a set of essays originally published between 1985 & 2003, not the 1960's. Further her description of the contents of the book does not seem to tally with the actual contents
What I have read so far is balanced, biblical & helpful. I will post a fuller review later. In the meantime I suggest reading the reviews over at amazon.com
In the meantime I'll give it 4 stars for what I've read
Very out of date - By: Dr Hilary Johnson, 09 Jun 2005
I really liked the title & the potential of such a book to give a christian perpective of mental health & illness, however, very soon after starting to read it, I was very disappointed. The book was originally writtenin the 60's, & has been reprinted & revised since, however, sadly, the author is stuckin his clearly difficult & challenging experiences of the 60's. There are some real gems, hidden, but the biased, inaccurate & totally unhelpful, if not harmful, recounts of 'secular' treatments for mental illness, is outrageous!! Mental health practice & evidence for effectivness of treatments has changed possibly more than any other medical specialtyin the past 40-50 years. The author would do well to consult christian academic psychiatrists, of whom there are a significant number, to update & challenge his book- it could then become a supurb resourse for christians who are helping vulnerable people. As it stands, I believe this book could be potentially harmful.
