So Plop, who was quite new at flying, took a deep breath & flew down........
In his quest to ease his fears, & with his Mummy's advice, Plop goes on to meet an old lady, a boy guarding a camp-fire, a girl who tells him about Father Christmas, a man with a telescope & a black cat who takes him exploring.
From these encounters, Plop comes to realize that the dark is not so nasty after all:-
The little boy said that DARK IS EXCITING.
The old lady said that DARK IS KIND.
The boy at the campfire said DARK IS FUN.
The little girl said DARK IS NECESSARY.
The man with the telescope said DARK IS WONDERFUL.
The black cat said DARK IS BEAUTIFUL.
and by the end of this delightful book, Plop has a different opinion on being a night bird as he joins his Mum & Dad to do what all barn owls do!
Love the book but watch out for the abridged version! - By: Mrs. Megan E. Howarth, 11 Dec 2007 I loved this book when I was a child & was desperate to buy a copy for our little boy as our old copy was rather "well used". If you are a fan of the original version then watch out as I managed to purchase an abridged version by mistake (shown as new edition) - it wasn't very clear on the website that this was not the full book.
Look out for number of pages - the full copy has 112, abridged 40. The new shorter edition looks wonderful with lovely new illustrations & would be good for younger children but I'm too nostalgic for the original so will be swapping this.
Great Kids Book - By: James, 28 Nov 2007 I still remember this from primary school, so it surely must be a great little story. I also remember being slightly tickled, as a 7 year old, by the fact that the Owl is called Plop, he he. If I have kids I'll definitely read it to them.
Many fond memories - By: Vicky Wilkinson, 12 Nov 2006 Recently, a very close friend of mine who went to school with me reminded me of this book. Our year two teacher had read it to us when we were younger. It must have been my favourite book of the time.
It is about a little owl who is too afraid to venture out of his nest at night. Along his epic journey to get over his fear, he meets all kinds of children who help him.
It is a wonderful book. If you have small children or younger brothers or sisters, do consider getting this for them. Its a lovely story.
My Favourite Childrens Book - By: Z. Hill, 10 Jul 2006 This book was one of my favourite books when I was a child now 20 years on it is the only one of the childrens books I read that still holds a special placein my heart, now with a 3 year old son of my own I am determined to get a copy for him as I am sure that he will love it just as much as I did & still do.
