Childhood Classics - By: K. Sinclair, 30 Jul 2008
I clearly remember reading these excellent books when I was a child {between 8 - 13}, & have just purchased the full set of six for when I have my own children.
However, my one problem with the books, & the reason I have only given them 4 stars, is that Award Publications Ltd is clearly under-estimating today's children : all the books have been printedin *large* print.
I know of many children who will refuse to read them once they realise this, as for many large print still implies that a book is aimed at younger children. It also means that what was once a silm paperback is now a thick tome ~in fact, they are at least twice the width of the editions we hadin the 1990's.
But, that issue aside, these are still classic children's books, which will bring pleasure to readers {young & old} for many years to come.
Wonderful. - By: L. Hay, 20 Mar 2007
This book is the first of the Barney series. It is aimed at the slightly older child but the Famous Five fans should love it. The action centres on a dilapidated mansion. There is the tutor who is not quite what one would expect, lashings of fabulous meals, a monkey, a circus boy who does not quite ring true, a cheeky 12 year old, two older cousins, a lunatic dog, secret passages, mystery & suspense. A musty atmosphere permeates the story & it is an excellent read.
You will not be disappointed with this one.
