It's like book nine, but with no ending. - By: Sarah Larsen, 30 Oct 2009
The book is written just the same as the last four books;in detail, this wouldn't be so bad, but for the fact that the ending is rather jarring, it reminds me of the end of The Two Towers, when Frodo is captured & it all ends rather suddenly, although this book doesn't quite stand up to the writing of the late J.R.R. Tolkien.

It could have been much better, as the next book proves, it's still a must read for any fans of course. My advice is to skip the chapters about Perrin as absoutely nothing about them is worth reading, the only chapters I have ever skippedin any book were Perrin chapters. I could tell you what happens if you like: Perrin still doesn't like being adressed as a lord, he still wants to sacrifice everything trying to find faile, he still barely eats anything (but neither does anyonein the book), Aram still follows him around but we still don't get to see him use his sword, Perrin still talks to wolves & finds out nothing from them, Perrins friends are boring, & so on, one good thing about this book is that the hateful faile is onlyin one chapter.

R.I.P. Jordan, I'm glad you managed to organise the completion of the series with another author, it wouldn't do well to be remembered for leaving an eleven part epic unfinished.

Hmm - By: Mr. B. Grief, 09 Jul 2009
Firstly, I really liked the books up to 6 as with most people. Jordan is truly an amazing writer, who is sadly now gone, the greatest tradgedy is not for us but for him, he never got to complete his lifes work. A truly amazing imagination lost to the world.

However I think he did begin to lose the plot after 6 amazing as all the threads are, it just became tedious. I commend him on his portrayal of the Ais sedai, never has there been a better description of a bunch of annoying women, jibber jabbering, moaning & generally dithering. Exquisit, The hatred he encitedin me was astounding. Women with the ability basically to fix nearly everything, but not, because they'd rather talk about it!

So I too have stepped off the wheel of time. In the same way that Lord of the rings can be summerised as " 2 short dudes going to a lot of trouble to return some stolen property" wheel of time can be summerised as "a whole group of people doing exactly what another group of people did a while ago, which another group of people will do after they have finished doing it this time" It wasn't the end, but it was an end"

And I love fantasy fiction.
Improves with hindsight - By: rmsgrey, 26 May 2009
I'd read the first eleven books before, so by the time I got round to buying my own copy of this one, I had a fair idea what I was getting. I still read through the existing reviews before deciding which of the holesin my current collection to fill first.

Judging by the reviews, I was expecting there to be a lot of gratuitous lesbian spanking scenesin this volume (which may or may not have encouraged me to buy this one rather than another). As a result, my first reaction on finishing a book full of political intrigues & careful positioning of characters so that their eventual solutions to their immediate problems will set up long-term solutions to other problems down the line, my first reaction was "so where's the gratuitous lesbian spanking?" - if there was any, I missed it completely.

I first discovered the series when book 9 was still fairly new, so, unlike the fans who discovered the series fairly early, I didn't have to endure the waits for books 7, 8 & 9, with the plot inching forward almost imperceptibly every couple of years, with no endin sight. Taken by itself, book 10, half spent establishing what everyone else was doing at the time of the world-changing event that ended book 9, doesn't seem to advance the plot any more than the previous 3-4 books did. Takenin context with book 11, suddenly the slow shifts of book 10 look like the start of the endgame.

Book 11 is the book that convinced me that the end isin sight & book 10 is the book that sets book 11in motion. I expect that, read with knowledge of the contents of books 12 through 14, it will be even clearer that the ending of book 9 is the turning point where the series entered the final leg.

If you've read through to the end of book 9, then there's no point quitting now. If you've skipped ahead from book 5 or 6, I'd suggest getting books 9 & 11 rather than 10 & 11 - where book 11 solves various problems, book 9 poses several of them, & book 10 provides the transition to keep book 11 from being one deus ex machina after another. Then get book 10 & then get the earlier books you skipped. If you haven't made it at least to the end of book 5, I suggest you try something faster paced - like Lord of the Rings - & come back when you've built up some stamina...
Complete non-advancement of plot - By: Robert Dodds, 08 Feb 2009
I'm a huge fan of this series, but this is by far the worst book & most annoying. For me, having to wait over 600 pages top get to the most interesting character (Rand for me), & then only have 2 chapters related to him where he doesn't really do anything, is nothing short of disappointing. Aswell as that, precisely nothing of note happensin this book, as I'm sure you are aware if you have read other reviews. The writing is still superb even if there is a little too much description of unimportant things, but the most irritating thing about this book is it feels like nothing more than filler material from start to finish.
