on it's own terrible in the context of the series tolerable - By: Marco John, 01 Aug 2010
if you've gotten this far into the series CoT isn't going to stop you from continuing, however if you are looking into starting the series & you're individually checking out all the books this isn't a good book. slow, tedious, boring, but necessary as a set up for KoD just try & get through as quickly as possible & look forward to some cracking scenesin KoD.
Pleasantly surprised - By: Jimternet, 26 Mar 2010
I've heard bad things about this book, & because of this I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't anything like as bad as has been made out. Okay, so not a great deal happensin terms of advancing the plot, but it's not an awful book. This is however from the perspective of a reader who could, if so inclined, pick up the next volume immediately - perhaps I would think differently if I knew I had to wait several years for the next instalment.
This book mostly focusses on what I think of as the second rank of characters - Rand is the first rank - dedicating each of Perrin, Mat, Elayne & Egwene a sizable chunk each, taking their storylines from slightly before the end of the previous book & advancing them a little. I quite like that each character has their own chunk, rather than being interspersed with the others, as it helps me not to lose track.
The majority of the action comesin the last few chapters though, when we flick around the characters a little, & events begin to occur a lot more quickly. Mostly however this book does feel like a bit of a gap filler - but that doesn't make it bad from my perspective. It's still just as well written, the characters are almost truerin this book thanin a number of others, & so I'm happy. Yes, it's a pain that not a lot has happened & now I've got the prequel to read before getting back to the main story, but I actually don't mind.
Fast paced adventure - By: Mrs. Dorothy E. Brown, 11 Feb 2010
Jordan does it again! His well written adventure with all its complexities leaves you desperate for more. The interweaving of the story lines & the depth of characters makes you feel as if you arein the story not just reading it. I can't wait to read the next one.
It's like book nine, but with no ending. - By: Sarah Larsen, 30 Oct 2009
The book is written just the same as the last four books;in detail, this wouldn't be so bad, but for the fact that the ending is rather jarring, it reminds me of the end of The Two Towers, when Frodo is captured & it all ends rather suddenly, although this book doesn't quite stand up to the writing of the late J.R.R. Tolkien.
It could have been much better, as the next book proves, it's still a must read for any fans of course. My advice is to skip the chapters about Perrin as absoutely nothing about them is worth reading, the only chapters I have ever skippedin any book were Perrin chapters. I could tell you what happens if you like: Perrin still doesn't like being adressed as a lord, he still wants to sacrifice everything trying to find faile, he still barely eats anything (but neither does anyonein the book), Aram still follows him around but we still don't get to see him use his sword, Perrin still talks to wolves & finds out nothing from them, Perrins friends are boring, & so on, one good thing about this book is that the hateful faile is onlyin one chapter.
R.I.P. Jordan, I'm glad you managed to organise the completion of the series with another author, it wouldn't do well to be remembered for leaving an eleven part epic unfinished.
