Not Mandasue Heller either - By: Mrs. A. Hunt, 17 Jun 2008
I saw this book & decided to buy it, being a Martina Cole/Mandasue Heller fan. But I was surprised.
It was nothing like I expected it to be. From the first page, I found myself just reading, not because the plot was so scintillating i couldn't put it down, but because it was a light, easy read. Perfect for filling a few hours on a rainy day or a light read before bedtime.
It is not rocket science, it doesn't tell you how to split the atom, but its' good.
It follows the 4 gangsters wives, Poppy, Niki, Sadie & Kate. After one of the husbands is put into prison, it is basically about how his wife & her cohorts go about trying to get by when the money runs dry.
I thought that the writer kept the pace up throughout the book, & the storyline was really easy to follow. The chapters are pretty small too, & you can put it down, not pick it up for a few days but still remember the plot.
It isn't as indepth or as dark as Martina Cole/Mandasue Heller, but even so, it's a good story which keeps up a cracking pace. What I liked about this book was that it didn't have too many characters, basically just the 4 women & their men. But one drawback was I didn't really connect with any of the characters enough to care about what happens to them, & I don't like thatin a book.
So if you're at a loose end you could do worse than have a look at this book. Its quick & easy to read, easy to follow, not exactly chick-lit, butin some parts, just as light (andin some places,) just as fluffy
Let Down - By: A. M. Mcnally, 13 Jun 2008
Only one word to describe this book really...awful. I love the Martina Cole & Mandasue Heller genre. Having read all their books I wasin search of a new author.
What a waste of time, effort & money this book was, a total disappointment. Poor characters, poor story & appalling writing.
Please save yourselves
Rainy Day Read - By: Mrs. Vivien F. Brace, 24 Mar 2008
Curl up on a wet, cold, rainy day with a cup of hot chocolate & lose yourselfin this book for a few enjoyable hours. Very easy read & very enjoyable to lose the stress & strains of life for a good few hours. Loved it & will look out for more publications from this author.
Gangsters Wives - what a con! - By: Ms. L. Shaw, 08 Jan 2008
Awful book, basic idea with no thought to the characters.
Very stereotyped, &in all honestly an absolute crap book.
If you're interestedin crime fiction, then don't waste your money!
NOT a Martina Cole read - By: Verywellread, 28 Aug 2007
I find it perplexing when someone as unique & absorbing an author as Martina Cole gets somehow roped into front cover recommendations on a book that is not worthy of any of her work.
It is an easy, predictable & unchallenging read, with truly unbelieveable characters that don't end up the chiselled imagesin your head that many of Martina's do. (Maura's game etc)
The true villans code is dissolved virtually the instant that temptation crosses these women, which is an unlikely scenario for people whose not unsubstantial livelihoods have grown from sticking to it.
(A hardened gangsters wife, sleeping with an Asian policeman, hours after meeting him....I dont think so.)
If you want something to readin a day, then fine, but frankly I would not be takenin by the recommendation.
It's not badly written, but I had guessed the plot & the outcome about 2/3 through.
