A very well written shaggy dog story - By: Missieeff, 23 Aug 2010
I love everything that Sarah Waters writes & I gave this book only one star not because it's not a good bookin itself but because it does not do what it says on the tin (or the cover to be more precise). I know how well Waters can twist a story (take Fingersmith for example) & I was sorely disappointed when this book did not deliver the same punch. I didn't find it spooky either.
Emporer's new clothes? Probably. Worth reading if you are a Waters fan through & through but not if you just want a good read. Sorry.
Another cracker - By: the historian, 19 Aug 2010
Yet another splendid un-put-downable read from Sarah Waters. Very different from the Victorian settings for the earlier works but superb nonetheless. I need to read it againin order to drinkin all the tiny details & check that I didn't miss anything. Highly recommended.

Excellent book, ending was a let-down! - By: J. A. Wolff, 17 Aug 2010
Took this book on holiday with me after purchasing it a few months ago & not getting round to reading it. My holiday home was a lonely 5 bedroom housein Ireland that was quiet & remote at night, therefore i got halfway through the book & stopped reading because i was scaring myself to death. Back to busy London & i got down to work to finish the book it became very spooky & i had trouble sleeping, fast track to a major let-down ending & im so confused that im actually quite cross i spent all my spare time reading. In short its an excellent read upto the last few pages, Sarah Waters is an amazing author with a talent for descriptive narrative & period writing however i feel she has tried to be a bit too clever with the ending & it doesnt work, im thinking The Thirteenth Tale which had a satisfying ending.
