I liked it. It wasn't my choice. It was a book club member's. It was an easy read & although the characters were not really 'likeable' I felt a sympathy to them. Not a fan of mystery/spooky books but this was OK.

Having read a lot of the reviews, I eagerly read The Little Stranger. A reasonable start, thought the bit with Gip the dog was good & thought this was the start of someting big. It then got very tedious & a little, 'blah, blah, ish' ...but I stayed with it. It picked up its pacein the middle again, but, the ending....well, what a disappointment, who was the ghost???? Or have I completely missed the point. Having not read any Sarah Waters before, not sure atfer this i will either?
Not at all scary - By: Harriet James, 09 Mar 2010 I confess to this being the first Sarah Waters I have read. I bought it as part of a pack of the TV bookclub books (even though I am not following that on TV) as I thought it would be a selection of interesting books to read. I was looking forward to being scared & thrilled by it, but I mostly wasn't. A few other reviewers have talked about the dreariness of the house & the flatness of the characters & I agree. The book took a long time to get going & although there were one or two marginally scary parts, I would neverin a month of Sundays say that I was 'so scared I had to stop reading' as others have. Perhaps I livein a much more terrifying real world, but I don't think so!
I also thought that there was a certain amount of license - because she had other bestsellers under her belt, that allowed this to get published. If it was her first book & she was sending it off to publishers/agents, would the first 50 pages have got her a call back? I'm not sure. Not much happensin them! I did comment to my husband that I was '150 pagesin & it was finaly beginning to show signs of spookiness'.
It was entertaining enough, but overlong & a bit dull. I wasn't really scared throughout it at all.

This book was chosen by my book group, & I started to read with some trepidation having looked at the blurb which said things like 'I had to sleep with the light on...' But I really enjoyed it, it's a page-turner, setin post-war warwickshire. Technically a ghost story I suppose, but very well written (listed for the Man Booker prize) & dwelling more on the effect of the 'happenings' on the people involved, & the way the same events can be interpreted differently by different people. Recommended!
A bit disappointing - By: 2of5, 05 Mar 2010 Overall a good read but annoying. It's the typical "Let me stay & look after you". "Oh no I'm fine, you go home I'll be ok" .......and of course she's not fine & it's not ok! What a surprise.
