Good Beginners Book - By: mvonsaatz, 11 Aug 2005
I've lived here all my life & always had an interest so this is probably not aimed at me. Although I did learn one or two things, I knew most already.
If I were a visitor or just beginning to look around me, though, this would be an ideal way to start. The walks are well thought out, the language engaging & I think this might inspire me to investigate more if I didn't already spend most of my time peering between the cracksin London's beautiful facades!
A Good Guide! - By: Astolath, 20 Oct 2004
I ordered this book with a view to planning a day of walking around the city with a friend. There are several walks planned out for you, with details of places of interest, places to stop for refreshment etc. The only problem was that, on the particular route we followed around St. Pauls, the map didn't appear to be 100% accurate & we had to rely on our backup copy of the A-Z. Not a huge problem,in fact it's sometimes fun to drift slightly off course just for the satisfaction of finding your way back again. This is probably partly due to the fact that London seems to be continually changing & most maps are out of date as soon as they are published.
A good guide book, but just make sure you've got an A to Z handy as well!
Good clear book on the secrets of London - By: Shawade, 24 Aug 2002
This is a 'nice to have' text rather than a 'must have', a proportion of the book refers to places & things that are not really 'secret', more hidden from public view (elements of the libraryin parliament for example) which was not really what I was expecting when I ordered it. There are however some excellent walks describedin here which are probably worth the purchase price for alone.
An essential book for those who love exploring London - By: Cath Prince, 05 Jan 2002
What a great book! It is full of fascinating facts & information that your average London guide book doesn't give you! It made me want to explore the cityin much more detail! I was rather disappointed to see that the House of Detentionin Clerkenwell has actually closed down now, so perhaps the book needs to be updated? Nevertheless, the chapter on all the subterranean tunnels under London, was fascinating - especially the section on disused tube stations. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys discovering the other side of London.
A fascinating insight into London - By: James Cridland, 06 May 2001
First, a warning - things changein London. Don't expect to find everything that you read aboutin this book - or, at least, don't believe the maps! We went to see a fascinating secret crypt, which isin the middle of the City: not "the only new buildingin the area" (as the book says) but actuallyin the middle of a whole load of new buildings that have sprung up since the book was written. But still. A fascinating book, a lot of information (though rarelyin quite the detail you'd like), & well worth a read.
